Activities Around Budapest
You don't have to leave Budapest to enjoy a bit of hill walking, as the Buda hills are technically still part of Budapest and can be reached by a regular public transport. Here you can find Hármashatár Hill, a popular destination not only for hikers but mountain bikers and paragliders as well. The rocky hilltop provides amazing panoramic views of Budapest and of the Cserhát, Mátra and Pilis hills. Further afield, at 699 meters, Dobogókő is the highest peak in the Visegrád Hills with a large network of well-marked tourist trails of varying difficulty. Dobogókő is also favourite starting point for downhill mountain bikers. Near Visegrád are two dry bobsleigh tracks, one open in summer and the other all year round. The Danube Bend is an ideal setting for Nordic walkers, while the Canopy in Visegrád is an exhilarating experience of soaring through the forest from tree to tree on cables. One of the most popular walks in the Pilis Hills is Rám-szakadék, a gorge that is an adventurous, yet easily accomplishable trail. Börzsöny is another easily accessible hill range in North Hungary, which also includes part of the Duna–Ipoly National Park. If you are looking for a serious workout, head for the highest peaks, Csóványos and Nagy-Hideg-hegy. For a truly unforgettable experience, take to the skies and see the beautiful sites of Budapest, the Danube Bend and the hills from a sightseeing airplane, hot air balloon, glider or paraglider.
Golf has only been discovered by Hungarians quite recently, but several courses have sprung up where you can practice this noble outdoor activity in Budapest (Academy Golf Budapest) and the surrounding areas (Paplaposgolf & Academy in Monor and Magyar Golf Club in Kisoroszi).
If an adrenaline rush is more your thing, visit Hungaroring, the Hungarian F1 track in Mogyoród that offers activities that are guaranteed to raise your pulse. Motorsport lovers can drive a race car or their own car or motorbike on the track, try off-roading and race go-karts on the country's biggest go-kart track. The one-day complete Hungaroring experience is a must for speed addicts and engine enthusiasts. You can sharpen your skills at Driving Camp in Zsámbék, where drivers can train to drive safely in extreme weather conditions or off-road on a state-of-the-art circuit. You can never go wrong with paintballing if you have a slightly competitive group of friends, and there are plenty of indoor and outdoor arenas to choose from all year round both in and around Budapest, such as Pannon Paintball, Patriots Paintball and Extreme Paintball.
